How your score is calculated

FICO scores are built from 5 factors — weighted by impact

of score
Payment history
Always pay on time. Even one 30-day late payment can drop your score 50–100 points.

Credit utilization
Keep balances below 30% of each card limit. Under 10% per card is optimal.

Length of history
Don't close old cards — their age history contributes to your average account age.

New credit
Hard inquiries from loan applications typically drop your score 5–10 points for 12 months.

Credit mix
Having both revolving (cards) and installment (loans) accounts helps — but don't open accounts just for mix.
For immigrants & visa holders

Building US credit from zero

A thin or no credit file is one of the most common challenges for new immigrants. Without US credit history, you may pay higher deposits, face rental rejections, and miss out on the best loan rates. The good news: you can build a strong credit profile in 12–18 months with the right strategy.

1Secured credit card with $500–$1,000 deposit. Use for one recurring charge, pay in full monthly.
2Become an authorized user on a family member's US account with good history.
3ITIN holders can open accounts and build credit before receiving a Social Security Number.
4After 12 months, apply for an unsecured card. In 24 months, a Roth IRA or small car loan adds mix.
