What makes up your FICO score
35%
Payment history
The most important factor. Pay every bill on time, every month. Even one 30-day late payment can drop your score by 50–100 points.
30%
Credit utilization
Keep balances below 10% of your credit limit for best results (below 30% is minimum). Never use your full credit limit.
15%
Length of credit history
The age of your oldest account, newest account, and average age all matter. Starting early pays off — a 5-year-old account is meaningfully better than a 2-year-old account.
10%
Credit mix
Having both revolving credit (credit cards) and installment loans (auto, personal loan) helps. But do not take on unnecessary debt just for mix.
10%
New credit inquiries
Each hard inquiry drops your score slightly (5–10 points). Do not apply for multiple cards at once. Rate shopping for mortgages and auto loans within 14–45 days counts as one inquiry.
12-month action plan
Follow these steps in order for the fastest credit build
Month 1–2Open a secured credit card
→Apply for a secured card from Discover, Capital One, or your bank — these accept applicants with no credit history
→Deposit $300–$500 as collateral (this becomes your credit limit)
→Use the card for one small recurring charge (e.g., Netflix, gas)
→Set up autopay for the full statement balance
Month 2–4Consider a credit-builder loan
→Self Inc. and credit unions offer credit-builder loans specifically for this purpose
→You make monthly payments; the funds are held in a savings account and released to you at the end
→Reports to all three bureaus — adds installment loan diversity and payment history
→Typical term: 12–24 months, $25–$50/month
Month 4–6Monitor and optimize
→Check your credit score monthly at no cost: Credit Karma (TransUnion/Equifax), Experian app, or your bank
→Verify all accounts are reporting correctly — errors are common and must be disputed
→Keep utilization below 10% at all times (pay down before the statement date, not just the due date)
→Do not close the secured card, even if you get a better card — account age matters
Month 6–12Upgrade and expand
→At 6–12 months with on-time payments, you may qualify for unsecured cards with rewards
→Ask your secured card issuer to "graduate" you to an unsecured card — many do this automatically
→Apply for one rewards card (cash back or travel) if your score is 680+
→Avoid store cards — they have low limits and high interest rates
Year 2+Build toward mortgage and auto readiness
→Score of 750+ typically qualifies for the best mortgage rates
→Add a second travel rewards card if you are organized and pay in full monthly
→Consider an authorized user arrangement if your employer or spouse has an old account
→Keep old accounts open — the length of history compounds over time
Common mistakes to avoid
✗ ITIN does not build credit
An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) allows you to file taxes but is not connected to a credit file. You need to open credit accounts that report to Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion.
✗ Indian credit scores do not transfer
CIBIL and other Indian bureau scores are not recognized by US lenders. You start from zero in the US regardless of your credit history in India.
✗ Debit cards do not build credit
Using a debit card or paying cash builds zero credit history. You must use credit products that report to bureaus.
✗ Closing old accounts hurts
When you close a credit card, you lose that account's age contribution and available credit limit. Keep old accounts open even if you rarely use them.
✗ Carrying a balance doesn't help
You do not need to carry a balance to build credit. Pay in full every month to avoid interest while still building history. The myth that carrying a balance helps is false.
